Credit Report Errors

A credit report is supposed to reflect a consumer's real financial history. When it doesn't, the consequences can reach into every part of life, from loan approvals to housing applications to job offers. Federal law provides important protections when consumer reports contain inaccurate information and gives consumers rights to dispute information they believe is wrong

Problems We Handle

A credit report with errors that were never corrected may be a case Bolos Consumer Law can take on.

  • Inaccurate account reporting
  • Accounts and debts resulting from identity theft
  • Incorrect personal information, such as a wrong name, address, or Social Security number
  • Mixed file cases
  • A living consumer reported as deceased
  • Credit reporting disputes that were ignored or mishandled
Mixed File Cases

A mixed file happens when one consumer's credit report gets tangled with someone else's information, often because of a similar name, birth date, or Social Security number.

This can look like:

  • Another person's accounts appearing on a consumer's credit report
  • Another person's debts being reported as the consumer's own
  • Another person's identifying information showing up in a consumer's file
Deceased Reporting Cases

Being wrongly marked as deceased is one of the more disruptive credit report errors a consumer can face.

It can include:

  • A living consumer being reported as deceased
  • Loss of access to credit because of false deceased coding
  • Credit denials caused by inaccurate deceased reporting

Know Your Rights

The Fair Credit Reporting Act provides important protections when credit reports contain inaccurate information. Consumers have the right to dispute inaccurate information, and credit reporting agencies generally must conduct a reasonable reinvestigation of qualifying disputes.

When a bureau ignores a dispute, fails to investigate it properly, or confirms inaccurate information as correct, the consumer may have a legal claim.
